3 Simple Ways To Support Global Missions - Right Where You Are Written by Karen Robin Paul When we think of missions, it’s easy to picture someone traveling to distant lands, living among different cultures, and sharing the gospel firsthand. Jesus also said, “Go and make disciples of all nations…” But what does that look like if you’re not the one going? The beautiful truth is that God's mission is a team effort, and there are vital roles to play right where you are. Whether you're a student, a parent, working full-time, or simply wondering how you can make an impact from home, here are three powerful ways you can support global missions without stepping onto the mission field full-time. Invest in the Mission In Philippians 4:15-19, Paul expresses his gratitude to the church in Philippians for being the only church to support him at one point in his ministry. According to an article by ‘East-West’, “Financially supporting missionaries and mission organisations is one-way believers can ensure the work continues. Every gift, no matter how big or small, can make a difference in the life of someone who has never heard the gospel.” When I was younger, I would see my parent’s supporting orphanages and missionaries, and learnt from them what the Lord Jesus means about being a ‘cheerful giver’. Often people who are on the mission field, find it really challenging to ask others for monetary support- and you don’t need give a set amount every month- start small and within your means, maybe even donate or provide care packages for things they need. But always remember to be a cheerful giver, because your gift will definitely make an impact! Be Persistent in Prayer We might not be on the mission field, but we can help lift the weight of those who are by praying for them. An article by ‘Within Reach Global’ provides an analogy of how being a missionary is like living in a dragon’s cave. “It’s like living in a dragon’s cave and pulling people out of his tail daily. It takes risk, courage, creativity, and love. Sometimes we get wounded, and sometimes we get paralyzed by fear. […] Sometimes we get tempted to let go of people as the dragon roars doubts, lies, and discouragement in our faces. Sometimes the dragon pulls out temptations of our forsaken family, country, possessions, and old life ways…”. Prayers strike like daggers at heart of the enemy. So, pray for strength, faith, wisdom and continued vision for people on the field. We get so carried away by praying for our immediate needs, we often forget to pray for God’s glory to be made known among the nations and the least-reached people groups in the world. I urge you, to take time when you can, to join people online or in-person, and pray for Christ to be made known among global missions, for nothing of significance happens without prayer. Strengthen the Workers Another way you can support missions and missionaries is to be an encouragement to them. Invite or host missionaries for a meal, ask questions about their work, and listen to the various updates they have about the field. As often as possible, have or maintain contact with missionaries, this helps in building relationships and an avoidance to an ‘out of sight, out of mind’ attitude. Whether you’re at work, school, or at home, take time to share the gospel, and have meaningful conversations with those around you. Disciple and support new believers in understanding the importance of the need for global missions. Finally, if possible and if you enjoy travelling, visit or lead a short-term outreach program to grow your faith, and to support missionaries in a different country. There are over 8 billion people on this planet, and 3 of those have not heard the life-changing message of the Gospel.
