On Good Friday, the sixth day of Holy Week, we remember the moment when Jesus was crucified on the cross, giving up His spirit, and willingly died for our sins and took upon Himself the iniquity of us all.

New Testament

Mark 15:33-38

At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”). When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.” Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said. With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.

Old Testament

Isaiah 53:5-6

But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

You are the Prince of Peace.

We thank you for taking our place on the cross,

paying for our iniquities in full.

You were pierced and crushed for our sins,

yet you were obedient to God through it all.

Thank you for making a way for us to come to the Holy of Holies,

removing the separation between God and man through your sacrifice.

You reconciled the lost, redeeming all creation.

By fulfilling the law and prophets,

you restored us to the Father.

We pray for the Good News of salvation that we have received ourselves,

to be passed on to those around us in our communities and families.

May your living Word be heard, read, and received by open hearts.

We praise you for all that you have done,

for all you are doing right now, and for all you will do.

Amen
