Holy Monday celebrates the moment when Jesus cleansed the temple. Having found the temple filled with money changers and merchants, He overturned the tables of the money changers and those selling doves and drove them out.

New Testament

Matthew 21:12-13

Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’ but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’

Old Testament

Jeremiah 7:11

Has this house, which bears my Name, become a den of robbers to you? But I have been watching! declares the Lord.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

How beautiful is your name in all the earth.

Thank you for not abandoning us to our sin.

Thank you that your heart is to see us fully restored to you.

Purify our hearts, O Lord,

and shine a light on any sin and darkness in our own lives.

Bring us to repentance as we yearn to be more like you.

Keep us from going our own way,

and keep reminding us of your plan for our lives.

Keep us from relying on our own strength;

for compared to your infinite power,

we are barely a vapour in the wind.

Yet you love us and have redeemed us,

according to your great love.

May we seek to honour you in all we do,

not for human gratification or acknowledgement,

but because of all you’ve done.

Amen
