Holy Saturday, also known as the Great Sabbath, commemorates Jesus's burial. After Jesus’ death, His body was taken down from the cross by a man named Joseph and was placed in a temporary tomb.

John 19:38-42

Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders. With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away. He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds. Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs. At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid. Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.

Heavenly Father,

We give you thanks for you are good

and your love endures forever.

Thank you for offering atonement for our sins,

washing us as white as snow.

Help us to remember the price you paid for us,

responding in joyful praise and reverence.

We ask for Your light to shine from us,

showing your love and transformative power to everyone we meet.

We pray for those we know who are going through difficult and trying times.

Surround them with your peace,

and show them just how much you care for them.

For those who have deep and difficult questions about faith,

we pray you will bring along wise

and Godly friends to walk alongside them.

For those who are feeling weak and distant from you,

we pray you will speak into their lives.
