Holy Wednesday, also known as Good Wednesday or Spy Wednesday, is the day that commemorates Judas offering to betray Jesus. Having been entered by Satan, he went to the chief priests to discuss how he could betray Jesus.

New Testament

Luke 22:1-6

Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people. Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve. And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. They were delighted and agreed to give him money. He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present.

Old Testament

Psalm 55:12-14

If an enemy were insulting me, I could endure it; if a foe were rising against me, I could hide. But it is you, a man like myself, my companion, my close friend, with whom I once enjoyed sweet fellowship at the house of God, as we walked about among the worshipers.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

You are our light and our salvation.

Thank you that you are in control,

and we can rely on you to sustain us through every trial.

Help us to know that you are always with us.

Keep us from temptation and shield us from the enemy’s attacks.

Teach us to wear the full armour of God,

to stand firm, keep alert,

and to always be coming to you in prayer.

Break our hearts for what breaks yours,

give us a desire to share your love with those around us.

We pray for opportunities to share the gospel

with those who have not yet heard.

Thank you for the example you have set for us,

enduring so much yet staying in fellowship with the Father.

Teach us to follow your ways, hungry to know you more.

Amen
