Maundy Thursday, also known as Holy Thursday, commemorates the Last Supper, when Jesus washed his disciples' feet and established the Eucharist. This marks the beginning of the three days leading up to Easter, often called the Triduum.

New Testament

Luke 22:14-20

When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfilment in the kingdom of God.” After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.”

Old Testament

Genesis 14:18-20

Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High, and he blessed Abram, saying, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. And praise be to God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand.” Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank you for giving your body for all who will believe.

Thank you for pouring out your life for us.

We remember the sacrifice you made,

the innocent blood of the Lamb that was spilled for our guilt.

What greater love could ever be shown?

Help us to never forget what you did for us

on that preordained day.

Remind us each day that we are redeemed

by your death and resurrection.

You offered yourself as a perfect and unblemished sacrifice to God,

cleansing our consciences from acts that lead to death,

so that we may serve the living God.

Help us to live in peaceful community with other believers.

We pray especially for young and emerging churches

that they would be guarded from the schemes of the enemy.

Grow us each day as we rely on you for our strength.

Amen
