What is a spotlight region?

OM is committed to seeing a community of Jesus followers within reach of every person in the world. We work in 147+ countries and on our two ships, Logos Hope and Doulos Hope. However, the spotlight regions are parts of the world where we want to focus on giving a strategic focus for prayer, workers and resources.

How are the spotlight regions chosen?

OM's area leaders selected the spotlight regions for 2025-2029 as places around the world with a high percentage of least-reached people and where our teams are seeking to make a difference.

What are the new spotlight regions?

OM’s new spotlight regions are as follows:

  • Greater Caucasus – Azerbaijan, Georgia (including Abkhazia), Armenia, Republics in the North Caucasus Federal District of Russia: Dagestan, Chechnya, Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia
  • Horn of Africa – Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia
  • Sahel – Niger, Mali, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Mauritania
  • Southeast Asia Crescent – Indonesia, Brunei
  • Southern Europe – Spain, Italia, Portugal

Spotlight region: Greater Caucasus

Over 23.4 million people live in the countries of Azerbaijan, Georgia (including Abkhazia), Armenia, Republics in the North Caucasus Federal District of Russia: Dagestan, Chechnya, Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachay-Cherkessia.

The religious landscape is diverse, with some countries having a large Shia Muslim presence and others some having a large Sunni Muslim presence.

Spotlight region: Horn of Africa

The Horn of Africa, a region located in the northeastern corner of the African continent, consists of Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea and Ethiopia and has an estimated total population of approx. 140.7 million people.

It is considered one of the least-reached areas worldwide with Islam being the primary religion in most countries, except for Ethiopia which has a long Christian history.

Spotlight region: Sahel

The combined population of Niger, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso and Mauritania, is approx. 100 million people. Over 95% of the population of these countries follow Islam and Sunni Islam predominates, with Sufism having a significant cultural and spiritual influence.

The Sahel has become a hotspot for extremist violence, witnessing a surge in attacks by radical jihadist groups, leading to widespread instability.

Spotlight region: Southeast Asia Crescent

The total population of Brunei and Indonesia is approx. 277.4 million people. Sunni Islam is followed by over 80% of the population, however, there is also a mix of Sufism and local folk Islam in some regions.

Indonesia has one of the largest Muslim populations in the world, and while some places have a growing church presence, the number of Christians engaging in ministry across religious backgrounds is small.

Spotlight region: Southern Europe

France, Spain, Italy and Portugal have a combined population of approx. 185 million people. According to the national Evangelical Alliances in these countries, an estimated 1.2% of the population are evangelical Christians.

In large parts of Southern Europe there are no evangelical churches or Christian witnesses, and Christianity means belonging to a traditional institution, but not being in a living relationship with Jesus.

Please join us in praying for these five spotlight regions and for the gospel to be known amongst the least-reached people living in these areas.
