04 - Biharis, in Bangladesh Get to know the Bihari people in 4 parts - learn, see, act, pray! 1 - Learn Bangladesh is a small but beautiful country filled with rivers and fertile land. Although it covers only 144,000 square kilometers, it has a huge population of 155 million people, making it the most crowded country in the world. This large population brings both challenges and opportunities. The Bihari community in Bangladesh comes from families that moved from India, especially from Bihar, during or after the partition of India in 1947. Many Muslims moved to what was then East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), hoping for a safer place to live. However, the Bihari people faced discrimination over the years, especially because of their ties to Pakistan during Bangladesh’s independence war in 1971. For many years, they had no citizenship. In 2008, a court decision allowed many Biharis to become Bangladeshi citizens, letting them vote and take part in society. Even though this was a big step forward, Biharis still face challenges. Most live in poor conditions in 70 crowded camps, which were meant to be temporary. The biggest camp, called Geneva Camp, has 25,000 people living there. Sadly, only about 5% of Biharis have access to formal education. They remain one of the most disadvantaged groups in Bangladesh. 2 - See 3 - Act Thekua (dessert from Bihar) Recipe Go To Activity 4 - Pray Pray for the safety of Bihari people living inside the camp. Recently, innocent people were killed due to gang fights over control of the camp. Pray for young Bihari people to avoid drugs, which are easily available in the camp. Many families have been destroyed because of drug addiction. Pray for the OM team as they continue working with the Bihari people. They are planning a pre-Christmas program for 200 Bihari individuals who have heard about Jesus throughout the year. This is a wonderful opportunity to share His love with them. < Back to PRAY - Christmas 2024 Manage Cookie Preferences
