17 - Pomaks, in Greece Get to know the Pomak people in 4 parts - learn, see, act, pray! 1 - Learn In the mountains of Thrace, a region in northern Greece, there is a community called the Pomaks. They live in villages known as “Pomakochoria,” tucked away in the peaceful Rhodope mountain range. The Pomaks are a Muslim minority whose identity has been shaped by centuries of history under various empires. The Pomaks speak several languages: Turkish at home, Greek in school or work, and their own special language, the Pomak language, which is passed down orally. While they hold Greek citizenship, their way of life blends influences from both Turkish and Balkan cultures. For a long time, the Pomaks lived in isolation, but they have preserved their traditions. Their Islamic faith is very important to them, guiding their daily routines. They observe Ramadan, eat only halal food, and the women often wear conservative clothing. Many Pomak families are supported by relatives working in Germany, especially in industries like ship repair. Life in the Pomakochoria villages is simple and quiet. Unlike many Greek villages, there’s no central plaza. Instead, older men often gather at coffeehouses called kaffenions to chat, drink coffee, and share ideas. Traditional crafts, cooking, and fashion are a big part of Pomak culture. The women are creative with their clothing, sometimes blending modern styles with their traditional attire. The Pomaks are proud of their heritage. Even as they adapt to the modern world, they keep their traditions alive, showing resilience and cultural pride. 2 - See 3 - Act Traditional Pomak Dance Dance Go To Activity 4 - Pray Ask God to soften hearts and open doors for the gospel to reach this community, bringing freedom and peace through faith.
