22 - Bouyei, in Laos Get to know the Bouyei people in 4 parts - learn, see, act, pray! 1 - Learn The Bouyei are an ethnic group recognized by China as one of its 56 minorities. Most of them live in the Guizhou province, but they also live in Yunnan and Sichuan provinces, and even in neighbouring countries like Vietnam and Laos. The Bouyei speak three different dialects, but these can change from village to village. They didn’t have their own written language until 1956, when the government helped them create a script based on the Latin alphabet. The Bouyei people are mostly farmers and are known for their skill in making arts and crafts. One of their most famous crafts is batik, which is a method of creating designs on fabric by dyeing it. This tradition goes back a long time and is now one of their most popular items, sold both in China and abroad. The Bouyei have their own traditional beliefs, which include many gods and spirits. They practice a type of exorcism called "nuo," and they hold special rituals during important times in life, such as when a baby is born. 2 - See 3 - Act Homemade Batik (Dyed Fabric) Craft Go To Activity 4 - Pray Pray that the Bible would become accessible to the Western Cham people in their own language, and that as they seek deeper meaning in life, Pray for God's blessing on the Western Cham people as they work the land, that He would sustain their agricultural practices and their skills in arts and crafts.
