Get to know the Southern Barasano people in 4 parts - learn, see, act, pray!

1 - Learn

The Southern Barasano people live in a small community of around 15 people in the jungle of Colombia. While their culture, language, and traditions are unique, they are part of a larger group of people living in the Amazon region of Colombia.

The Southern Barasano practice animism, which means they believe that everything in nature—such as animals, plants, and even things like rocks—has a spiritual essence.

Their traditional way of life includes wearing special clothes, making music with instruments like marimbas, drums, flutes, and cununos (small drums), and using traditional medicine. They also practice farming, fishing, hunting, and raising animals. The elders of the community share stories about how the first humans came from an anaconda snake that traveled up the river, leaving behind different groups of people, including the Barasano. Since then, they have lived in the jungle, learning its secrets and respecting all plant and animal life.

The Southern Barasano people have a strong connection to the environment and see it as a key part of their spirituality and culture. They use canoes, harpoons, traps, and hooks to navigate and gather from the jungle, always careful to respect the land and its resources.
