08 - Kabyle Berbers, in Algeria Get to know the Kabyle Berbers in 4 parts - learn, see, act, pray! 1 - Learn The Kabyle Berbers are a group of people from the Kabylia region in Algeria, near the Mediterranean Sea. This area is made up of mountains and covers two parts of Algeria: Tizi Ouzou and Bejaia. There are between 7 and 9 million Kabyle Berbers. About half live in Algeria, while the other half mostly live in France. The mountains around their homeland have helped protect them for many years, allowing them to resist invaders like the Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, and Arabs. The Kabyle people speak their own language, Kabyle, but most also speak Arabic. They mainly work in farming but also make things like textiles and pottery. Many Kabyles are involved in politics to help protect their culture and keep their independence. Their traditions include music, art, literature, and science, which are important parts of their identity. Kabyle families are very close, with grandparents, parents, and children often living together in one home. Fathers are the heads of their families and take part in village councils, which make decisions for the community. Most Kabyle Berbers are Muslim, but they aren’t always strict about following Islamic rules. When they converted to Islam long ago, they kept some of their old traditions, like honouring saints from before Islam. 2 - See 3 - Act Kabyle Belt Making Craft Go To Activity 4 - Pray Pray that God’s message would be heard and understood in their native language, and that the Kabyle people would respond with open hearts to His Word. Pray for the fathers in the community, that their hearts would be transformed by Christ and that they would lead their families and communities toward the good news of salvation. Ask God to work within their beliefs, guiding them to seek the freedom and hope that only Jesus can offer. Pray for them to have the boldness to live out the gospel among the unreached in Algeria and beyond. Pray that God would be protecting the church from false teaching that are targeting the area. < Back to PRAY - Christmas 2024 Manage Cookie Preferences
