Get to know the Nubian people in 4 parts - learn, see, act, pray!

1 - Learn

The Nubians are an ancient group of people who live along the Nile River in northern Sudan and southern Egypt. They are one of seven non-Arab Muslim groups in Sudan. They speak their traditional Nubian language as well as Arabic.

Long ago, the Nubians were herders, farmers, and miners. As they travelled along the Nile, they grew wealthy by trading gold, ivory, incense, and cattle with their Egyptian neighbours. At one time, Nubia was a powerful kingdom with impressive buildings, including structures similar to the Egyptian pyramids.

From the 1500s to the 1800s, the Ottoman Empire took over parts of Nubia, forcing many Nubians to move to remote areas. Later, in the 1960s, the building of the Aswan High Dam flooded many Nubian villages. Around 100,000 Nubians had to move, some settling near Aswan, while others relocated to countries like Uganda and Kenya.

Today, most Nubians rely on farming. They grow crops like wheat, barley, millet, and beans. Some men travel to cities to work, while women stay behind to farm and take care of their homes. Many women also work as teachers, seamstresses, or in public service jobs.

Nubians are mostly Muslim, but their beliefs also include traditions from long ago. They believe the Nile River has special powers to give life and that it is protected by angels and other spirits.
