12 - Kanembu, in Chad Get to know the Kanembu people in 4 parts - learn, see, act, pray! 1 - Learn Chad is home to the Sahara Desert in the north, the Sahel region in the centre, and the Lake Chad Basin in the southwest. The Kanembu people can be found predominantly between the shores of Lake Chad and the Sahara Desert. The Kanembu people are descendants of the Kanem-Bornu Empire, a major power in central north Africa from the 9th to the 19th century. The living style of this tribe has changed minimally over the centuries, with many living in mud brick houses and wearing clothes resembling Biblical times. Despite this, they are considered to be the wealthiest tribe in the area, making up 75-80% of all merchants in Chad. Many others are farmers and herders, whilst others mine for natron. Living at the edge of the world's largest hot desert, the Kanembu people are a resilient community dependent on the oasis that Lake Chad provides. The Sahara desert is, despite common tales, mostly rock and gravel, with just 30% being sand. 2 - See 3 - Act Paper Roll Animals Craft Go To Activity 4 - Pray Ask for God's provision of water, food, and sustainable resources as they depend on Lake Chad and its oasis for survival.
