15 - Sardinians, on the island of Sardinia in Italy Get to know the Sardinian people in 4 parts - learn, see, act, pray! 1 - Learn Sardinia is an island in the Mediterranean Sea, close to another island called Corsica. It is home to over 1.5 million people. Throughout history, Sardinia has been invaded by many groups, including the Romans, Vandals, Arabs, and Austrians. It officially became part of Italy in 1861, but many people in Sardinia still see themselves as Sardinians first, rather than Italians. While Italian is the official language, people also speak Sardinian, Catalan, and Arabic in different areas. The island’s main industries are farming, real estate, and tourism. Sardinians are very proud of their culture and traditions. They enjoy many festivals and love to come together to share meals made from local food. Family is very important to Sardinians, and it’s common for families to gather together on weekends. Sardinian families often follow traditional roles, with men usually working outside the home and women taking care of the children and the household. Like the rest of Italy, most Sardinians are Roman Catholics and many attend church services regularly. 2 - See 3 - Act Pane Carasau (Sardinian Flatbread) Recipe Go To Activity 4 - Pray Pray for continued prosperity in Sardinia's farming, real estate, and tourism industries, and for fair opportunities for all.
