The Camino outreach is a short term project where you will use sport to reach out to pilgrims walking the Camino de Santiago.
Every year about half a million people walk this ancient pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela and these days many people are walking in search of ‘something’, direction in life, processing life events or searching for God as an example. It is also considered to be one of the most open areas in Europe to share the gospel, as most pilgrims are more open to listen, discuss and reflect while on the Camino.

Ministry Details:

During the Camino outreach you will meet pilgrims where they are and speak truth into their life. You will have opportunities to share your testimony, faith in Jesus and the Gospel to the pilgrims along the way.

When you sign up for this sports-based outreach you can choose between two options:

1. You will be based and staying in an albergue right on the Camino de Santiago in Os Muiños and you will reach out to pilgrims walking by and coming into the albergue. In the evenings there may be opportunities to play and lead sport activities including Tikva sessions in the nearby town.

2. You will walk about 100 km of the Camino de Santiago and reach out to pilgrims that you meet along the way and in the albergue’s where you stay during the walk. We will also lead Tikva stretch & relax sessions while at the albergue in the evenings as a form of restoration after walking and as an outreach opportunity.

This outreach is also for those who have questions about sports ministry and sports as mission. We will have conversations about sport as worship of God.

Participant Profile:

We are looking for people who:
- have a passion for sports, fitness & health and Jesus
- Want to know more about using their sports talents as mission or local ministry
- Are able to walk on average 20-25 km per day in varying weather conditions
- Want to be challenged physically, mentally and spiritually
- Want to talk to new people and share their faith
- Are flexible, willing to listen and learn

Basic Spanish is not required but is highly recommended.  Other languages such as French and German are also useful but not essential.  You need to be able to communicate in English as that will be the team language and the language that most international pilgrims use.

Accommodation

On the Camino you will stay in albergues (pilgrim hostels). Often the accommodation in the hostels is mixed i.e. men and women sleeping in the same dormitory.  You will sleep in your own bed.  The hostels provide a sheet and blanket. We recommend bringing a sleeping bag liner with you.

Food

All meals are included in the cost. If you walk the Camino, you will be given a per diem to purchase your meals. If you stay at the base in Os Muíños all of your meals will be prepared by the hosts.

Travel

If you are flying, you should arrive by plane at A Coruña airport (LCG) or Santiago de Compostela airport (SCQ).  If you are traveling by train, you can arrive at the train station in A Coruña or Santiago de Compostela.  There are then public transport links to A Coruña railway station or bus station, also you can arrive by bus into the A Coruña bus station.

Please do not book flights unless you have received an official acceptance email.

Health

This outreach is physically demanding. You need to be physically fit as the team will be hiking on average 20 to 25 km per day for a total of 120 km to 140 km over consecutive days.  Galicia, the region of Spain where the Camino takes place, is known for being cooler and having more rain than the rest of Spain. The weather is unpredictable, even in the summer, so it could be warm, cool, wet, or dry.

Visa

British citizens can travel to countries in the Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa.

Please note that it is the responsibility of each traveller to ensure they obtain the necessary visa(s) required for entry into the country that they plan to visit. This excludes destination countries for Ships related travel. We strongly recommend that all visa applications be submitted to the relevant consular website as per their specified requirements well in advance of your intended travel date, this could be up to 8-12 weeks in advance.

If a visa is denied or not obtained in time, we are unable to offer any reimbursement for flight costs or any other travel-related expenses. All bookings are made at the traveller’s own risk, and we advise confirming placement/outreach approval before making any non-refundable travel arrangements.
